چکیده

The microscopic mechanism leading to stabilization of cubic and tetragonal forms of zirconia (ZrO2) is analyzed by means of a self-consistent tight-binding model. Using this model, energies and structures of zirconia containing different vacancy concentrations are calculated, equivalent in concentration to the charge compensating vacancies associated with dissolved yttria (Y2O3) in the tetragonal and cubic phase fields (3.2 and 14.4% mol respectively). The model is shown to predict the large relaxations around an oxygen vacancy, and the clustering of vacancies along the 〈111〉 directions, in good agreement with experiments and first principles calculations. The vacancies alone are shown to explain the stabilization of cubic zirconia, and the mechanism is

Effect of Dopants on Zirconia Stabilization-An X-ray Absorption Study: I, Trivalent Dopants

Local atomic structures of Zr and dopant cations in zirconia solid solutions with Fe,03, Ga203, Y203, and Gd203 .have been determined. The Zr ions in both partially stabilized tetragonal and fully stabilized cubic zirconia have their own characteristic structures which are dopant-independent. The dopant cations substitute for Zr ions despite severe local distortions necessitated by the large di...

Doped zirconia phase and luminescence dependence on the nature of charge compensation

Zirconia is a relatively new material with many promising practical applications in medical imaging, biolabeling, sensors, and other fields. In this study we have investigated lanthanide and niobium doped zirconia by luminescence and XRD methods. It was proven that charge compensation in different zirconia phases determines the incorporation of intrinsic defects and activators. Thus, the struct...

Modelling of point defects in monoclinic zirconia

We present the results of plane wave density functional theory calculations of oxygen vacancies and interstitial oxygen atoms in monoclinic zirconia. After calculating the incorporation energies and structures of interstitial oxygen atoms and formation energies of neutral oxygen vacancies, we consider the electron affinities and ionisation potentials of these defects. These properties are espec...

Zirconia doped with low-valent cations (e.g. Y or Ca) exhibits an exceptionally high ionic conductivity, making them ideal candidates for various electrochemical applications including solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and oxygen sensors. It is nevertheless important to study the undoped, monoclinic ZrO2 as a model system to construct a comprehensive picture of the electrical behaviour. In pure zir...

Oxygen and Cation Diffusion Processes in Oxygen Ion Conductors

We discuss oxygen and cation diffusion processes in oxygen ion conductors. While the high oxygen diffusivity determines the proper oxygen ion conductivity, slow cation diffusion processes are important for sintering and degradation processes. In the first part of the paper we discuss an analytical model for the ionic conductivity of a strongly acceptor doped, fluorite-type oxygen ion conductor,...
